This striking photograph was taken sometime between 1953 and 1955 in Coleville, WA, of a Native woman digging for bitterroot with a digging stick. Her identity is unknown.

Bitterroot, also known as the Resurrection Flower, has a long history of medicinal and culinary use. The thick, starchy roots are best harvested in early spring.
